2-Nitrophenyl-β-D-Galactopyranoside is a colorimetric and spectrophotometric substrate for detection of ß-D-Glacotosidase. 2-Nitrophenyl-β-D-Galactopyranoside does not depend on a constitutive permease enzyme to enter the cell. As a reult its reactions are rapid and occur within a 24-hour period. β-Galactosidase is not lactose specific and can act on simple galactosides.
